The Canadian International Trade Tribunal today initiated a preliminary injury inquiry into a complaint by Nutri-Pea LP and Roquette Canada Limited, of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, that they have suffered injury as a result of the dumping and subsidizing of pea protein from the People’s Republic of China. The Tribunal’s inquiry is conducted pursuant to the Special Import Measures Act (SIMA) as a result of the initiation of dumping and subsidizing investigations by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault, is providing the following statement on an April 21 meeting in Ottawa with ministers and high-level representatives from all regions of the world organized in partnership with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) International. This meeting brought momentum to the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) to work toward the development of a first-of-its-kind legally binding global agreement on plastic pollution by the end of 2024.

This year marks the 11th annual Our Gathering meeting, a forum unique to British Columbia, where B.C. First Nations and Canada come together to discuss shared priorities in an open and honest way.

Today, the Indigenous Coastal Waters Stewardship Society and the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, announced $50 million in funding to support First Nations stewardship in the Salish Sea and waters along the west coast of Vancouver Island.

  30. Today, Minister of Labour Seamus O’Regan Jr. announced the appointment of an Industrial Inquiry Commission on the underlying issues in longshoring labour disputes at Canada’s West Coast ports. The Commission will be chaired by Vincent Ready and will include Amanda Rogers as a Member of the Commission. The Commission will soon begin meeting with stakeholders and reviewing consultation submissions from relevant parties. The Commission will present its findings and recommendations in a report to the Minister in Spring 2025.

On April 19, 2024, Zhongmin Zheng was sentenced to pay a total of $35,000 after pleading guilty in the Alberta Court of Justice to two charges under the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act (WAPPRIITA). In addition to the fine, Zheng was issued a prohibition order which prohibits the possession of any live animal for a period of two years. This includes wild animals, livestock, and pets.

Today, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced the Commission’s decision that the existing environmental assessment (EA) for the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP) is applicable to the reactor technology selected by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the General Electric Hitachi BWRX300 reactor.
